“Nothing is ever lost as time passes, it merely metamorphoses into something as wonderful or, in some cases, into something even better than before.” ― Carole Carlton

For Imbolc, I want to give tribute to the goddess, Brigid, with a short blog. I’d also like to mention that Optimist Day is approaching as well (celebrated annually on the first Thursday of February). It’s a great time to shine! Think positive and walk into the days with love in your heart.

There are usually 333 days left of the year, but during a leap year it’s 334 days. Still the shortest month of the year, February marks the ending of winter and the beginning of the growing season. Watch for daffodils and tulips popping up through the dusting of the snow. Plan your gardens, start your seedlings. It’s a time of new beginnings, so try something new, learn something new, make changes, and always be grateful. Wiccans especially love this day. It is a pivotal moment in the Wheel of the Year, representing renewal, awakening and hope. This is the halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox.

The goddess Brigid is honored among Wiccans. In honor of Her, the holiday, Imbolc is celebrated. If you feel the call to light a white candle and make an offering to Her, please do so. The holiday actually dates back to pre-Christian, ancient Celts specifically in Ireland and Scotland but started even before then.

According to history.com Brigid was born on this day with a flame in her head. Her birthday is celebrated by rituals such as burning lamps and lighting bonfires. Later on, She was adopted into Christianity as St. Brigid. This Brigid created a monastery and spent her life there.

Brigid, Brigit, Brighid, however you want to spell Her name, is considered to be a “triple goddess:” Maiden, Mother, Crone. She encourages you to develop and express all your gifts. She is revered as the goddess of poetry, fertility, healing, smithcraft (or alchemy), and prophecy.

As for symbolism, Her elements are fire and water. Her tree is the oak tree. And Her animals include cows, sheep, lambs, serpents, swans, owls and bees. Personally, I associate Her with the rabbit. She is one of my spirit guides. When I see a rabbit I know She is around and might have a message for me.

Feeling the shift? How about a quick Imbolc gratitude? List three things that spark hope or joy for you today—maybe early signs of spring, a creative idea, or simple comforts. Let gratitude light your own inner flame.

Here are mine:

  1. More sunshine is on the way! Longer days mean more productivity and more fun.

  2. Soon the earth will thaw, which means more walks and better health!

  3. The air will warm and people will be safe from the cold of harsh winter.

The sun has risen and the day has begun. Goddess bless you! May your day be full of fresh air and the blessed sun.

Happy Imbolc!

Love,

Tracy
