The Quiet Power of Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale, a Short Commentary

Dear Reader,

After reading The Nightingale, I remembered that I had once written a short review of another Kristin Hannah novel, Winter Garden. That earlier story wasn’t a happy one. The Nightingale isn’t a happy story either, yet it is filled with love, loss, and extraordinary suffering, strength, and endurance.

This is a novel I will never forget. As a woman, I am deeply grateful that Kristin Hannah chose to write about these French women who performed incredible acts of courage simply to survive and to help others amid the atrocities of World War II.

I studied German war literature in college. I hope this book finds its way onto those reading lists.

Did you ever see Schindler’s List in the theater? Do you remember how, after the credits rolled, the entire audience sat in silence? How people finally rose and walked out quietly, almost carefully? That is exactly how I feel about this novel. I don’t think I can write a proper review of it—except to say: read it.
